Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) and Country Fire Authority (CFA) responded at 10.08am near Bay Trail and Westgate Park, Port Melbourne after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported a grass and scrub fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a grass and scrub fire about 50m by 50m burning with multiple trees on fire.

The response was escalated, and additional appliances, including aerial support, were requested as there were multiple seats of fire moving in a south-westerly direction and limited water supply in the area.

Crews worked to contain three seats of fire, both north and south of West Gate Freeway.

In total about 12 appliances, including a helicopter, and 45 firefighters from FRV and CFA responded.

A community warning was issued for smoke across the Westgate Bridge.

The scene was deemed Under Control at about 1.44pm.

Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police were on scene.

Forest Fire Management Victoria and Parks Victoria also attended.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this stage.

Due to challenging weather conditions and the complexity of the incident, crews are expected to remain at the scene for some time.
