Maribyrnong house fire started by heater overnight

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to a structure fire at 12.40am on Blair Street, Maribyrnong after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported a house fire.

An upgraded responded was initiated due to a number of calls and concerns a child was inside.

Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes to find smoke issuing from the top floor of a three-storey house.

Crews wore breathing apparatus to enter the building as they made their way to the top floor.

Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the fire to one room and extinguish the blaze but not before the wall and ceiling were significantly damaged.

Crews conducted checks and confirmed there were no occupants still inside.

An adult and child had evacuated and were treated by Ambulance Victoria for smoke inhalation.

A total of seven appliances and 23 firefighters responded to the incident.

The ignition source was found to be a nearby heater.

A municipal building inspector will attend the scene to assess damage to the structure.
