FRV crews were called to a shop fire in Victoria Road at Northcote following a call to Triple Zero (000).
They arrived five minutes later to find a café well alight.
Firefighters used breathing apparatus and began an internal attack on the fire and prepared for a search of the premises.
An aerial fire truck was used to assist extinguishing the fire.
It was deemed under control within 28 minutes after first arriving on scene.
A community warning was published to alert to the significant amount of smoke in the area.
Victoria Police officers and Ambulance Victoria personnel were also on scene assisting FRV.
