Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to a hazardous material incident on Williams Street, Melbourne at 7.53am after calls to Triple Zero (000) reporting diesel fuel flooding through corridors and dripping through ceilings of a high-rise building.
Crews arrived within six minutes and evacuated 160 occupants from the commercial premises, there were no reported injuries.
FRV investigated and found a leak from a diesel fuel line on the 21st floor that spilled across 4 levels, down to the 18th floor.
A total of 35 firefighters attended the scene and through swift action contained the leak and spill which involved about 6,000 litres.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have placed absorbent on the spill to soak it up and are expected to remain on scene for several hours.
FRV crews are conducting atmospheric monitoring to ensure scene safety, but the building will remain closed for the day.
Once deemed safe, the incident will be handed to building management.
Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria are also on scene.
