Firefighters extinguish Port Melbourne shop fire

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to a structure fire at 1.35am on Bay Street, Port Melbourne after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported a car and shop fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes to find a vehicle in a shop front that was well alight.

The blaze caused significant damage to the ground floor with fire extension to the second floor of the two-storey building.

Occupants above the shop evacuated without injury, however, occupants of a neighbouring premises were transported to hospital for observation.

Firefighters knocked down the fire externally before they could gain access to the premises and fully extinguish the blaze.

The incident was deemed Under Control at 2.05am.

Firefighters remained at the scene to monitor for hot spots.

The gas and power companies also attended.

The incident was deemed suspicious, and the scene handed to Victoria Police.
