Firefighters swiftly contain Preston apartment fire

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to a structure fire at 11.11pm on Cooma Street, Preston after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported a unit fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene within six minutes to find a fire on the top-floor of a three-storey brick apartment building.

Occupants from the 31 apartments were evacuated safely.

FRV crews aggressively fought the fire and were able to prevent it spreading to neighbouring apartments.

In total, 30 firefighters and 10 appliances responded to the blaze.

Damage to the unit is extensive and smoke logging occurred to other apartments on the top-floor.

One female sustained burns and was transported to hospital.

The fire was deemed Under Control within 40 minutes.

Police remained on scene and co-ordinated the temporary rehousing of all residents.

FRV will remain on scene to undertake fire duties throughout the night and FRV Specialist Fire Investigators will attend this morning to help determine a cause.
