Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded at 4.22pm to a structure fire on Ebden Street, Moorabbin after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported a factory fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene within six minutes to find smoke and flames issuing from a 30m by 40m brick building, housing a panel beating business.

No injuries were reported.

Initial reports of explosions heard near the scene may have been due to gas bottles inside the premises.

FRV and CFA crews used multiple hoselines and utilised aerial firefighting appliances to attack and contain the blaze.

Thanks to the swift work of FRV and CFA crews, the blaze was not only contained to the building of origin, but one half of the factory was protected from damage to the structure and assets.

However, there has been significant structural damage, including roof collapse.

During the peak of the response, there was 17 appliances, including two aerial appliances, and approximately 60 firefighters on scene.

The fire was declared Under Control at 5:33pm.

A Community Advice warning was issued for large amounts of smoke in the area, this advice message will remain active until 10pm.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria are on scene to assist firefighting activities.

The cause of the fire is not yet determined but FRV's Fire Investigation Unit (FIU) will attend the scene on Wednesday.

Firefighting duties will continue overnight and a section of Sullivan Street, between South Road and Walter Street, will remain closed for some time.

Council building surveyors, as well as the power and gas companies attended the scene.
