Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) crews responded to a fire in an apartment block in Ashburton early this afternoon following multiple calls to Triple Zero (000) just before 1.15pm.

Firefighters arrived in under six minutes to find an apartment on the second story of the 50 x 10 metre complex well alight.

The occupant of the affected unit was able to evacuate safely.

Firefighters and Victoria Police worked quickly to evacuate all occupants of the building. No injuries have been reported.

Crews donned breathing apparatus and used multiple hose lines to attack the fire and bring it under control.

An aerial firefighting appliance was also used in extinguishing the blaze.

The fire was declared under control at 1.40pm, 20 minutes after firefighters arrived on scene.

One apartment sustained extensive damage in the fire, and a neighbouring unit received minor damage.

Fortunately, firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading to all other units in the apartment complex.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined but will be investigated.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria are on scene assisting.
