Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to a structure fire at 2.30am on Wellington Street, Cremorne following multiple calls to Triple Zero reporting a house fire.
Crews arrived on scene within six minutes to find a single-storey brick home well alight.
Occupants of neighbouring houses were forced to evacuate as the flames threatened their properties.
Although the home was reported to be vacant, a full search of the property to confirm this took some time due to parts of the roof collapsing.
It was later confirmed no occupants were inside the building.
The rear half of the house was extensively damaged in the blaze.
The fire also extended into the roof of a neighbouring house before FRV crews were able to bring it Under Control at 3.04am, within 28 minutes.
During the peak of the response, there were about 33 firefighters on scene.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is not yet known but it will be investigated.
Firefighters remained on scene for some time to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
