Fire Recue Victoria (FRV) responded to a shop fire in the early hours of this morning after multiple calls were made to Triple Zero.

Firefighters arrived at the Burke Road scene shortly after 4am, less than four minutes after being deployed, to find a fish and chip shop fully ablaze.

Crews immediately began an aggressive external attack on the blaze in a double storey shopping strip.

The ground floor takeaway food shop and residence above have been extensively damaged in the fire but through their quick work firefighters have been able to stop it from spreading to neighbouring businesses in the row of five shops.

Two persons in the residence above the shop at the time of fire were able to evacuate safely without injury.

The fire was declared under control at 04:59am, 49 minutes after fire crews arrived on scene.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Firefighters will remain on scene for several hours fully extinguishing the fire and investigating its cause.
