Historically, some firefighting foams contained Per-fluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (known as PFAS).
Career firefighters in Victoria are leading the world in reducing exposure to PFAS. This will improve the safety of our community and our firefighters.
We have established safe threshold limits for firefighters. We are also working to decontaminate fire stations, appliances, and other essential equipment.
Our PFAS project team is renowned for strong advocacy on this issue. The team has delivered submissions to Federal and State Governments and global organisations such as:
- the Federal Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade into the management of PFAS contamination in and around defence bases, and
- the United Nations Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
